Our Review

The Short Version

The TaylorMade TP5x is the firmer, faster, higher-launching half of TaylorMade's five-layer tour ball family. Where the standard TP5 chases soft feel and maximum wedge spin, the TP5x is built for speed: low spin and a piercing flight off the driver, high launch with irons, and still enough urethane-cover bite to check wedge shots. It is a distinct ball from the TP5 already covered on this site, not a trim level, and for higher-speed players it is usually the better fit of the two.

Performance

The five-layer construction is the whole story. In the 2024 generation TaylorMade rebuilt the ball around a Speed Wrapped Core and progressive mantle layers, creating what the company describes as its largest speed gradient between the soft inner core and firm outer layers. The practical effect reported across independent testing is strong spin separation: driver and long-iron spin stays low for distance and a flatter, wind-resistant flight, while short-iron and wedge spin rises to tour levels. In one large multi-ball test the TP5x posted some of the tightest dispersion in the field, averaging only about four yards offline with the driver, and its 50-yard wedge spin ranked in the top quarter of balls tested. Ball speed off the driver is near the top of the premium class, and the higher launch helps faster players who generate low spin hold greens with long irons.

Feel and Accuracy

The TP5x is firm by tour-ball standards, with a crisper click off the putter and a more explosive sensation off the driver than the softer TP5. Players who like audible, definite feedback tend to prefer it; players who want a soft roll off the putter face usually migrate to the TP5. Accuracy is a genuine strength rather than a marketing line: the combination of low driver sidespin and a stable flight pattern has repeatedly shown up as tight shot patterns in launch-monitor testing, and the optional pix and alignment-stripe versions add a real visual aid on the green without changing performance.

Value

Premium pricing applies: current dozens list in the mid-to-high $50s, level with the Pro V1x, though the 2024 generation is widely discounted now that it is prior-generation stock, often landing in the mid-$40s on Amazon. At the discounted price the value case is strong, because the performance gap to the newest balls is small. At full list it competes head-on with every flagship ball in golf and has to win on fit.

Who Should Buy It

Faster swingers, roughly 105 mph and up with the driver, low-to-mid handicap players who launch it low or spin it low and want help holding greens, and anyone who prefers a firm, responsive feel. Slower swingers and players who need maximum greenside spin and the softest feel should start with the standard TP5 instead.

Verdict

The TP5x is one of the most complete high-speed balls available: fast and straight off the tee, high and holding with the irons, and controlled inside 100 yards, with accuracy numbers that back up the tour adoption. If you have the speed to compress it, it belongs on your short list. This is a research-based review.

Strengths

  • Five-layer design with Speed Wrapped Core delivers the largest speed gradient TaylorMade has built
  • Excellent spin separation: low spin off the driver, tour-level spin on wedges

Considerations

  • Firm feel and crisp putter sound will not suit players who prefer a soft roll
  • Full-list pricing in the high $50s matches the most expensive balls in golf
  • Needs genuine swing speed to compress the firm outer layers and unlock the design
  • Driver distance is strong but not class-leading in every independent test
  • Slightly less maximum greenside spin than the softer TP5 sibling
